Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has confirmed that Kyiv remains prepared to enter into a bilateral 'energy ceasefire' with Russia, following separate discussions with leaders from the United States and the United Kingdom in New York City. At the same time, he cautioned via a Telegram post on Tuesday that Moscow is currently organizing 'a new massive attack' against his nation.
President Zelenskyy traveled to New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly, during which he held a 40-minute meeting with US President Donald Trump. He described the dialogue as positive and productive, noting that the conversation centered on strategies to conclude Russia's full-scale invasion, which is now in its fifth year.
Writing on X, Zelenskyy stated that both nations share a desire to see the conflict resolved ahead of winter and reviewed potential de-escalatory measures to facilitate diplomacy. Speaking with reporters at UN headquarters, he clarified that Kyiv is ready to halt strikes on Russian energy infrastructure provided that Moscow ceases its attacks on Ukraine's energy grid. However, he emphasized that there were no talks with President Trump regarding a unilateral halt to Ukrainian operations targeting the Russian oil industry.
Addressing the broader geopolitical situation, President Trump noted concerns over the impact of Ukrainian strikes on Russian fuel-processing capabilities and global diesel prices, particularly ahead of the US midterm elections in November. Despite previous discussions regarding an energy moratorium, strikes have frequently resumed shortly after agreements were broached.
Following a separate meeting with UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham, Zelenskyy reiterated on Telegram that any discussion involving the relaxation of sanctions against Russia is out of the question while Ukrainian citizens face daily threats from missile and drone strikes. He further highlighted intelligence reports indicating that Russia is preparing a significant escalation in its aerial assaults as temperatures drop.
To counter potential threats to heating and power systems during the winter months, President Zelenskyy discussed an air-defence package with President Trump, requesting additional Patriot missiles. Additionally, UK Prime Minister Burnham stated that he advocated for the energy ceasefire during his talks with Trump and pledged continued financial assistance to support Ukraine's infrastructure.
