Qatar has officially welcomed the joint decision by Belgium and Rwanda to restore diplomatic relations and reopen their respective embassies, highlighting the move as a crucial step toward resolving differences through mutual understanding and dialogue. The announcement follows a series of diplomatic efforts, including crucial meetings hosted in Doha.

Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) issued a statement on Wednesday expressing appreciation for both nations acknowledging Qatar's role in addressing previous misunderstandings. The Ministry commended the constructive spirit shown by both sides, expressing hope that renewed diplomatic ties will pave the way for expanded bilateral cooperation and bolster regional and international stability.

Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Al Khulaifi, Qatar’s Minister of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA), also welcomed the restoration of ties, describing it as an important milestone. He reiterated Qatar's firm belief that dialogue remains the ultimate path to resolving disputes, noting that Doha is always prepared to support its partners in such efforts.

Al Khulaifi recalled that Doha hosted the initial direct meeting between the foreign ministers of Belgium and Rwanda in June 2025. That gathering was facilitated by Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Qatar’s Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, following a preceding period of strained relations.

In a joint statement, Rwanda’s Foreign Minister Olivier J.P. Nduhungirehe and Belgium’s Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot confirmed that their decision followed recent informal contacts and meetings where misunderstandings were successfully resolved. Both officials expressed sincere gratitude to the authorities of the State of Qatar for facilitating their historic initial meeting in Doha.

Diplomatic tensions had escalated in March 2025 when Rwanda severed ties with Belgium amid a disagreement regarding Belgium's stance on the conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Belgium had rejected accusations from Rwanda, maintaining that its position focused on humanitarian concerns and adherence to international law, alongside support for EU sanctions targeting senior Rwandan military officials and members of the M23 and AFC groups.

Alongside these discussions, Qatar also hosted separate talks involving Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo to address the conflict in eastern DRC, eventually participating in the signing of a Rwanda-DRC peace agreement in Washington in June 2025. MoFA concluded that the renewed relationship between Belgium and Rwanda will foster new avenues for cooperation and support broader peace efforts.
