President Javier Milei of Argentina has strongly criticized the United Nations during the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York City, accusing the international body of ignoring the long-running sovereignty dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom over the Falkland Islands, known in Argentina as Las Malvinas.

Addressing the United Nations General Assembly, Javier Milei described the islands as a national cause and condemned British-backed oil extraction plans in surrounding waters claimed by Argentina. At the center of the controversy is the Sea Lion oil project, located approximately 220km north of the islands. The project is managed by UK-based Rockhopper Exploration and Israel’s Navitas Petroleum, with drilling slated to begin soon and production expected by 2028.

In response to the drilling, Argentina initiated sanctions against 60 entities and individuals connected to offshore operations near the islands. British authorities dismissed the sanctions, maintaining that the Falklands possess the full right to develop their natural resources. Javier Milei asserted that the project violates a 1976 United Nations General Assembly resolution that urges both nations to negotiate and avoid unilateral actions.

To bolster its claims, Argentina has introduced funding for a naval base in Tierra del Fuego to strengthen its military presence close to the territory. The Falklands remain a self-governing UK overseas territory administered by Britain since 1833, following a 1982 war triggered by Argentina's invasion. While a 2013 referendum showed overwhelming support among residents to remain under British administration, Javier Milei argued that the principle of self-determination does not apply due to the population being settled by the occupying power.

This assertive approach marks a notable shift for Javier Milei, who previously faced domestic criticism for sidelining the dispute in favor of strengthening ties with the United States. Following recent comments from US President Donald Trump regarding Washington's stance on the islands, Javier Milei has sought to leverage his diplomatic relationships to advance Argentina's position, although domestic opponents argue the strategy is primarily aimed at boosting support ahead of the 2027 re-election bid.

Beyond the Falklands, Javier Milei launched a broader critique of the United Nations, labeling it a useless organization that fails to safeguard international security and human rights. He also reaffirmed Argentina's alliance with the West, emphasizing shared values with the United States and Israel while condemning Iran and its Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
