Neria Leiter, the reserve soldier son of Israeli Ambassador to the US Yechiel Leiter, sustained critical injuries on Wednesday afternoon during a vehicle ramming attack in the occupied West Bank. Regional authorities confirmed the incident occurred just a day prior to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's scheduled address at the United Nations. Serving at a checkpoint near the settlement of Beit Horon, the younger Leiter was rushed for emergency medical treatment to a hospital in Jerusalem.

Sharing a message on social media, Yechiel Leiter stated, “Neria needs a miracle. I believe in the power of prayer, and I believe that when the people of Israel unite, miracles happen.” The driver responsible for the attack, identified as 29-year-old Mahmoud Muhammad Mahmoud Suleiman from the nearby Palestinian village of Beit Ur al-Tahta, was shot and killed at the scene by the Palestinian Ministry of Health accounts.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Hamas praised the attack, labeling it a “natural response” to actions taken by Israel in Jerusalem and the West Bank. While the Gaza Strip militant faction encouraged heightened resistance against Israel, they did not formally claim responsibility for the incident. This tragedy follows the family's previous loss in November 2023, when Yechiel Leiter's 39-year-old elder son, Moshe Yedidya Leiter, was killed in combat in Gaza during the initial weeks of the war sparked by the Hamas-led assault on Israel the previous month.

The ramming incident unfolds in the wake of a recent West Bank shooting that occurred on the eve of Yom Kippur. On Sunday morning, Netanel Shukrun, a father of six hailing from the settlement of Alei Zahav, was shot and killed while visiting a natural spring in the West Bank as part of holiday traditions. The victim's 16-year-old son stated his father saved his life by yelling a warning to take cover. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported the arrest of the suspected shooter on Sunday at a hospital situated near the West Bank city of Ramallah.

In response to the shooting, far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir advocated for the enforcement of the death penalty under a newly introduced law targeting terrorism and nationalistic murders. Meanwhile, IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir emphasized the military's heightened readiness, stating, “The IDF is on high alert, deployed and prepared with soldiers reinforced across all sectors, including throughout the fast. Our mission is clear and ongoing — to thwart terrorism, act decisively against every threat, and protect the citizens of the State of Israel.”

Israel has conducted extensive military operations across the West Bank since October 7, 2023, aiming to neutralize perceived terrorist hubs. These widespread operations have resulted in military incursions into Palestinian villages and the displacement of tens of thousands of residents throughout the region. Defense Minister Israel Katz remarked in early September that “Terrorism currently in Judea and Samaria is at its lowest level in decades,” utilizing the biblical term for the West Bank, “and we will take all necessary steps to prevent terrorism from rearing its head again.” This remains a developing story subject to further updates.
