Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addresses the 80th United Nations General Assembly in 2025 at a critical juncture for both his political career and his country's relationship with the international organization. Israel continues to face serious accusations of genocide and systematic war crimes in Gaza and the occupied West Bank at the UN, shaping a deeply fractious dynamic.

As Netanyahu addresses the UNGA for the 15th time, the domestic stakes are exceptionally high. With polls indicating that Israeli voters are losing faith in him and his Likud party ahead of upcoming elections, Netanyahu aims to position himself as Israel's foremost voice on the global stage. Analysts note that the speech is designed to dominate domestic television networks and serve as a pivotal moment for his political image.

Former Israeli consul general in New York and ex-government adviser Alon Pinkas described the address as a regular fixture used by Netanyahu to project defiance against international criticism. Meanwhile, the historic hostility between Israel and the UN has deepened, marked by UNGA resolutions criticizing Israeli conduct, Israel declaring UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres persona non grata, and restrictions placed on the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA.

Nimrod Goren, president of the Israeli Institute for Regional Foreign Policy, Mitvim, noted that many Israelis perceive the UN as anti-Israeli. Local tensions have been further heightened by comments from New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, leading Israel's ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, to call for Mamdani's arrest over alleged incitement against the Jewish community ahead of the visit.

Despite questions regarding US backing—highlighted by US President Donald Trump's lack of a scheduled meeting—Washington has consistently used its veto power at the UN Security Council to shield Israel from resolutions demanding immediate ceasefires. Chatham House Associate Fellow Zizette Darkazally emphasized the broader challenges facing the UN, noting that institutional limitations and a decades-old veto system have left the organization struggling to maintain a significant political role in conflicts across Gaza, the West Bank, Yemen, Sudan, and Iran.
