Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva continues to hold a narrow two-percentage-point lead over Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, who serves as his primary challenger in a potential run-off leading up to October's upcoming presidential election, according to findings from a Datafolha poll.
The newly released poll results indicate that Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva would secure 47 percent of the vote, while Flavio Bolsonaro would capture 45 percent in a simulated run-off scenario. A preceding Datafolha poll conducted the previous week similarly placed Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva ahead of Flavio Bolsonaro with 46 percent to 44 percent. Because this outcome falls within the poll's margin of error of 2 percentage points, it constitutes a technical tie.
Regarding a first-round voting scenario, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva leads the field with 40 percent of the vote. He is followed by Flavio Bolsonaro at 36 percent, Augusto Cury at 5 percent, Ronaldo Caiado at 4 percent, and Renan Santos at 3 percent. The prior poll figures showed the leftist president capturing 39 percent compared to the right-wing senator's 36 percent.
Senator Flavio Bolsonaro is recognized as the eldest son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is currently serving a 27-year prison sentence following his conviction for attempting to overturn the 2022 election defeat to Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Meanwhile, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is campaigning for a fourth nonconsecutive term as the president of Brazil. Under electoral rules, if no candidate achieves more than 50 percent of the valid votes during the initial round, the top two contenders will advance to a run-off.
The Datafolha survey gathered responses from 2,002 individuals between September 22 and 23. These findings align with two other polls released earlier in the week. A Quaest poll published on Monday indicated Flavio Bolsonaro leading with 42 percent of voter backing in a potential run-off against 41 percent for Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Additionally, a BTG Pactual/Nexus poll reported Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva obtaining 46 percent of voter support against 45 percent for Flavio Bolsonaro in a similar run-off projection.
