The United States is actively working to arrange a new round of talks aimed at ending the protracted Russia-Ukraine war. Both Kyiv and Moscow confirmed on Friday their intention to relaunch trilateral discussions, potentially hosted in the United Arab Emirates.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told reporters that the American side has proposed a technical-level meeting in a three-way format, and they are currently awaiting a proposal regarding the date. The Kremlin later confirmed that a trilateral meeting could take place soon, though spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted there were no additional details to share at this time.

President Donald Trump’s envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, visited Russia and Ukraine earlier this month to jump-start ceasefire efforts. Previously, US diplomatic stances faced criticism for aligning with Moscow's narrative, which demands that Ukraine cede illegally occupied territory, demilitarise, and abandon its aspirations to join NATO. Peskov stated that a September 24 meeting in the US between Russian presidential envoy Kir_ill Dmitriev and Trump's envoys focused on potential economic cooperation.

Meanwhile, President Zelenskyy stated that President Trump informed him Ukraine would be granted permission to produce advanced Patriot air defence missiles. Although Kyiv desperately needs these systems to counter ongoing Russian drone and missile attacks, Trump has delayed approval, and any new systems would take over a year to become operational.

While attending the United Nations General Assembly, Zelenskyy continued pleading for allied support, writing on X that Russia will only escalate its aggression as winter approaches unless increased pressure is applied. He emphasized that for diplomacy to succeed, US sanctions must be fully implemented and European sanctions strengthened. Additionally, Kyiv is engaging with European Union representatives to accelerate military budget support amid warnings that resources could run out early next year.

On the ground, nightly barrages continue from both sides. Overnight strikes in Kyiv’s central Pechersk district hit a 16-floor building, killing a 14-year-old boy and injuring at least seven others. In the southern Odesa region, Governor Oleh Kiper reported one death and another injury from massive Russian strikes on a residential area and a postal operator's logistics premises.

Conversely, Russia claimed its air defence units destroyed approximately 50 drones over the Rostov region overnight, with a drone attack damaging the Novoshakhtinsk oil refinery and forcing a suspension of operations. President Zelenskyy noted that Ukrainian strikes have targeted multiple Russian oil facilities, including refineries in Moscow, Yaroslavl, Bashkortostan, and the Samara region, alongside unspecified operations in the Black Sea. Zelenskyy also reported holding discussions with India, Turkiye, Egypt, and other Middle Eastern nations to unblock cargo shipping routes in the Black Sea threatened by Russian targeting.
