Dubai's aviation and transport sectors are moving toward a new era of connectivity after the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced six bidding consortia for the design and construction tender of the upcoming Airport Express Line. This ambitious rail service will eventually link Dubai International Airport (DXB) directly to Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC).

Spanning 55 kilometres, the Airport Express Line will feature five dedicated stations, although the RTA has not yet finalized a timeline for the project's completion. The route will originate from the Dubai Metro Red Line station at DXB, pass through Al Jaddaf, and travel along Al Khail Road before stopping at Jumeirah Village Circle's upcoming Gold Line Metro station. It will then terminate at DWC in Dubai South. Additionally, two offshoots will integrate surrounding areas into the network near the Jumeirah Village Circle Metro station: one station will be situated in Business Bay, while the other will link to the Al Fardan Exchange Metro station near Dubai Marina.

The six competitive bids were submitted by Aecom/Surbana Jurong, AtkinsRealis, Jacobs (US), Parsons/Arup, Systra/Egis, and WSP. Each of these entities has previously contributed to major infrastructure developments in the country, such as Etihad Rail, the Dubai Metro, and Expo 2020. Furthermore, stations along the Airport Express Link are expected to offer passenger check-in and baggage drop facilities.

This major rail initiative aligns with Dubai's strategic plan to transition airport operations from DXB to DWC by 2032, coinciding with the completion of the project's first phase. By 2057, DWC is projected to evolve into the world's largest airport, boasting a capacity of 260 million passengers annually. Designed as a mega-hub featuring 400 boarding gates and five parallel runways, it will serve as the new home base for Emirates.

Dubai's broader transportation vision includes several other major rail projects. Etihad Rail's Al Yalayis station is set to open next month, marking the introduction of the emirate's first rail service. By 2030, a high-speed Etihad Rail connection will link Dubai and DWC to Abu Dhabi in just 30 minutes, including a stop at Zayed International Airport (AUH). Additional integration is planned through the Dubai Metro Red Line Route 2020, alongside the ongoing construction of the Dubai Metro's Blue and Gold Lines, which are scheduled to open in 2029 and 2032, respectively. With these developments, Dubai joins international counterparts like Shanghai, which connects Shanghai Pudong and Shanghai Hongqiao via the Shanghai Suburban Railway, and Seoul, which utilizes the Airport Railroad Express between Incheon and Gimpo.
