The United States and China have agreed to establish a dedicated "communication channel" to handle artificial intelligence (AI) incidents, according to a White House announcement following a high-profile summit in Washington, DC.
US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping held extensive discussions covering artificial intelligence, trade, and the ongoing conflict in Iran during a three-day state visit. The leaders also confirmed plans to meet for a third and fourth time later this year at upcoming international summits held in China and the US.
While the summit featured significant diplomatic ceremony, Al Jazeera’s Alan Fisher, reporting from the White House, noted that the meeting was relatively short on major breakthroughs. "There was a lot of ceremony and a lot of pomp. In fact, there was a lot more pomp than progress," Fisher said.
As part of the diplomatic engagements, both nations agreed to extend an existing trade truce that was set to expire in November, pushing the deadline to January to allow for continued negotiations. President Trump stated that the visit successfully strengthened his personal rapport with President Xi.
President Xi emphasized the need for "a healthy competition" and noted that as leading global powers in artificial intelligence, both nations share the responsibility to develop and manage AI safely. Alongside technology and trade agreements—which include a commitment by China to import at least 10 million metric tonnes of US coal in 2027-2028 and favorable tariffs on $30bn of non-sensitive goods—the leaders witnessed cultural exchanges, including plans for two pandas to arrive at a US zoo.
The two leaders are scheduled to meet again at the APEC summit in Shenzhen in November and the G20 in Miami in December, with the continuation of dialogue marking a primary outcome of the Washington meetings.
