The UAE has committed $10 million to combat the Ebola outbreak in Africa, while simultaneously lifting entry restrictions for Ugandan citizens following the official declaration that the country's outbreak is over.

This significant pledge was announced during an international meeting convened by the US on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, bringing together global leaders to coordinate the international response. The contribution is being channeled through the UAE Aid Agency under the direction of President Sheikh Mohamed.

Dr Tareq Al Ameri, chairman of the UAE Aid Agency, emphasized that the financial commitment underscores the nation's humanitarian mission and dedication to protecting vulnerable communities from infectious diseases. To date, the UAE has delivered over 150 tonnes of aid to affected regions, including critical protective equipment, infection-control materials, and food supplies that have supported approximately 280 health centres. Furthermore, Dr Al Ameri urged the international community to expedite its response and bolster health systems to improve prevention, early detection, and effective intervention.

Meanwhile, the ongoing spread of the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo continues to cause widespread concern regarding regional health and humanitarian impacts.

In a related policy shift, the UAE has officially eased entry restrictions for Ugandan citizens—initially implemented in June—now that the East African nation has successfully cleared the international monitoring period and been declared Ebola-free. This decision was jointly announced by the National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority (Ncema), the Ministry of Health and Prevention, and the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security following thorough assessments.

Authorities noted that precautionary entry measures will remain active for travelers arriving from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Sudan, with Ncema confirming that policies will continue to adapt in response to ongoing public health evaluations.
