Russia and Ukraine have traded a series of deadly attacks that resulted in the deaths of at least 10 people. This escalation comes as the United States pushes for diplomatic talks to end the ongoing conflict, while Moscow’s top diplomat places the blame on Europe for hindering potential negotiations.
According to officials from both sides on Saturday, Russian strikes resulted in four deaths across Ukraine, while Ukrainian military actions caused six fatalities in Russia and within Russian-occupied territories.
In the Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia, an overnight barrage of Russian drones and missiles led to the deaths of two women trapped under the rubble of their home, the regional military administration reported. Local officials also confirmed that a separate Russian attack claimed two lives in the city of Sumy.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the situation on X on Saturday, writing, “It is essential that our partners not forget: Russia is escalating every single day. If the Russians have chosen to make their strikes even more brutal, the world must choose stronger responses to keep the war from spreading further.”
Meanwhile, Ukraine has continued its long-range drone offensive targeting Russian oil refineries and industrial sites. In Russia’s southern Krasnodar region, a drone attack killed three individuals and left two others wounded. Governor Veniamin Kondratyev stated on Telegram that the strikes also triggered fires at two industrial facilities, with Russian media subsequently identifying an oil refinery among the targets.
In the Russian-occupied part of the Zaporizhzhia region, Moscow-installed regional head Yevgeny Balitsky reported that overnight Ukrainian strikes on Saturday killed three people, according to state media.
The Russian Defence Ministry announced that its forces successfully struck a cargo vessel carrying military supplies close to Ukraine’s Black Sea port of Odesa on Saturday, alongside a targeted logistics hub in the area.
These developments follow Friday strikes on Kyiv that killed seven individuals, injured 58 others, and forced a halt in operations at Ukraine’s largest steelmaker. ArcelorMittal reported that a series of recent strikes killed five of its workers and heavily damaged a major site. Historically, Ukraine’s steel industry accounted for 15 percent of the nation's total exports.
On the opposing side, Ukrainian forces targeted and struck oil refineries in Russia’s Perm and Novoshakhtinsk on Friday, leading to temporary operational shutdowns.

The deadly exchange follows statements made by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday, revealing that Washington proposed a high-level meeting involving Russian, Ukrainian, and US officials in the United Arab Emirates.
“Estamos awaiting a proposal from the United States regarding the date, and the United States has suggested the Emirates as a possible location,” Zelenskyy stated during a WhatsApp briefing. He added that representatives from Egypt, India, Turkiye, and the Middle East are participating in parallel discussions aimed at unblocking shipping lanes in the Black Sea, alongside proposals brought forward by other international actors.
Russian President Vladimir Putin remarked on Friday that all prior settlement proposals remain under consideration, though Moscow is currently evaluating which options align with its interests, Russian news agencies reported. Putin indicated that Moscow is prepared to resume talks with Kyiv following parliamentary elections, but criticized Ukraine for attempting to strike the capital and targeting polling stations.
Addressing the United Nations General Assembly on Saturday, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov accused European nations of actively obstructing peace discussions. Referring to the US government, Lavrov stated, “Europe is doing everything it can to thwart peace talks in which the [Donald] Trump administration is interested.” He further affirmed that Moscow is determined to achieve its military objectives in Ukraine “no matter the circumstances,” adding that the security threats facing Russia will be fully eliminated.
