German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul speaks during the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly at UN headquarters in New York City on September 26, 2026.

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has urged Russia to step back from its dangerous path of escalation with Germany, Europe, and NATO during a meeting with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, in New York. Held on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly on Saturday, these talks marked the first high-level engagement between the two nations since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. According to Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, the meeting was initiated by the German side and took place prior to Lavrov's address to world leaders.

During his UNGA speech, Lavrov characterized Germany as Kyiv's primary financial and military sponsor, accusing Berlin of striving to become a dominant military power in Europe once again. He questioned whether Berlin grasped the potential consequences and whether it had failed to learn the lessons of World War II. Diplomatic relations between Berlin and Moscow have remained severely strained since the 2022 invasion, deteriorating further following a recent drone incident at Leipzig airport in eastern Germany, which Berlin attributed to Russia. Moscow has vehemently denied these allegations, accusing Germany of fabricating evidence. Over the past year, European officials have repeatedly linked Russia to unauthorized drone incursions near critical infrastructure, military bases, and airports across the continent.

Following his address, Lavrov told journalists that the discussion with his German counterpart yielded no new insights beyond what Berlin had already published in official statements. Nevertheless, officials from both nations confirmed that the ministers addressed bilateral relations and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. A German delegation source reported to Reuters that Wadephul pressed Lavrov to secure an agreement on resuming grain exports through the Black Sea.

The diplomatic encounter coincides with broader international efforts to restore vital Black Sea grain and energy shipments, which have faced severe disruptions due to attacks on port infrastructure and maritime vessels. Lavrov noted that Moscow has engaged in discussions with India, Egypt, and Turkiye regarding frameworks to guarantee safe maritime navigation. However, he emphasized that separate negotiations with Ukraine would be necessary, insisting they must be conducted through demands rather than requests, while holding Kyiv responsible for attacks on shipping vessels. Conversely, Kyiv has maintained its willingness to negotiate agreements while placing full responsibility for the war's consequences on Russia's invasion.

In the aftermath of the meeting, Wadephul briefed European allies regarding the discussions. In a message reviewed by Reuters, he stated that he utilized the opportunity to reaffirm Germany's stance on Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine, while urgently advocating for an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire, with a specific emphasis on protecting grain exports and critical energy infrastructure.
