United States President Donald Trump announced that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has responded positively to his recent diplomatic outreach. The statement came just a day after the US president directed the Pentagon to scale back joint military exercises with long-standing ally South Korea.

During an Oval Office appearance on Monday, when reporters asked if Kim had replied to his call for a conversation, Trump stated, "Yeah, he has," describing their exchange as "very positive" while omitting further specifics. North Korea did not immediately issue any comments on the matter.

Over the weekend, Trump used his Truth Social platform to order the Pentagon to "substantially reduce" joint military drills with South Korea, calling the annual exercises costly and inappropriate given that North Korea has remained unthreatening toward his administration. He also tied this decision to Seoul's refusal to assist with the US-Israel war on Iran.

Addressing reporters again on Monday, Trump criticized South Korea over its stance on the Iran conflict, questioning the value of maintaining 39,000 American troops in the region to protect the country if local officials are unwilling to support US military operations. South Korean officials responded by confirming that drills had proceeded as planned and expressed hope that the personal relationship between Trump and Kim could eventually renew talks.

Seoul's presidential office emphasized that the exercises were never intended to provoke or attack North Korea, with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung noting their core purpose is to protect citizens' peaceful daily lives. Although Trump's rapport with Kim received less attention following their stalled 2019 nuclear negotiations, the US president has frequently expressed a desire to restart direct diplomacy, highlighting mutual respect with the North Korean leader despite Pyongyang's deepening military ties with Russia.
