UK police declared a major security incident at an airbase used by the US military for operations directed at Iran after a suspected cache of explosives was discovered nearby. A police statement on Sunday confirmed that several men had been arrested near RAF Fairford in connection with the operation after a bomb squad was deployed to the village of Whelford. The US military at the base was placed on the highest level of alert while authorities addressed the discovery, and the evacuation of nearby residents was underway.
Around 30 emergency vehicles, including police cars, ambulances, and fire engines, were stationed in the village of Fairford near the base. Gloucestershire police stated that properties in the Whelford area were being evacuated following the declaration of a major incident, while the army's specialist explosive ordnance disposal team examined several vehicles. Police later noted they believed the incident was contained and that the suspects had been arrested under the Explosives Act.
A representative for the US Air Force declined to discuss specific force protection measures, stating that the 501st Combat Support Wing and fellow UK-based Wings remain vigilant to ensure the safety and security of service members, civilians, contractors, and their families. Meanwhile, the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) criticized the continued use of the base for US operations, with CND general secretary Sophie Bolt arguing that it increases risks to the British population.
