A vessel has been struck by an “unknown projectile” while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, causing damage to the engine room and resulting in a crew casualty, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said.

The vessel’s company security officer reported the strike to UKMTO early on Tuesday, noting that the Omani coastguard was assisting the remaining crew. The British maritime agency confirmed that no environmental impact has been reported thus far, while authorities actively investigate the incident and work to determine who or what was responsible.

In response, UKMTO advised all vessels transiting the strait to exercise caution and immediately report any suspicious activity.

This event unfolds as shipping through the Strait of Hormuz faces severe disruptions, with daily vessel crossings dropping to single digits compared to more than 130 a day prior to the war on Iran launched by the United States and Israel. Regional tensions regarding control of the waterway remain exceptionally high.

Iran effectively blocked the strait after hostilities began on February 28, repeatedly targeting commercial ships and expressing its intent to charge users for passage. Meanwhile, a memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran designed to ease hostilities and unblock the waterway expired on Monday, even as Iran and Oman pursue separate talks concerning future navigation arrangements through the strait.
