Flames and smoke rise from a construction site after a Ukrainian drone attack in an undisclosed area in the Moscow region, Russia, August 18, 2026. Russian officials have reported more than 620 overnight drones targeting Moscow, marking one of Ukraine’s largest attacks on the Russian capital in years.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin stated that Russian defences successfully shot down 180 drones over the capital region between Monday evening and 5am on Tuesday, with an additional 17 drones intercepted en route later. Russia’s state-run news agency TASS characterized the massive barrage as the largest drone assault on Moscow in the past two years.
According to Moscow region’s Governor Andrey Vorobyov, the attacks wounded three individuals, including a 10-year-old girl. Writing on Telegram, Vorobyov noted that the most serious consequences occurred in the Pavlovsky Posad district where a house was completely burned down, while several additional homes and a guesthouse sustained damage in the Bogorodsky district.
An e-commerce logistics facility east of Moscow operated by Wildberries was also impacted during the Tuesday assault. Wildberries released a statement confirming that their complex suffered minor damage after falling debris struck a building wall. Ukrainian forces have targeted multiple Wildberries warehouses recently, alleging that the firm supplies components for Russian military drones.
Meanwhile, the Ukrainian air force reported successfully shooting down or suppressing 111 out of 147 incoming enemy drone attacks overnight. In Kharkiv, regional Governor Oleh Syniehubov announced that five people, featuring a nine-year-old boy, suffered injuries during an overnight Russian attack directed at the city of Izyum.
Additionally, Mayor Ihor Sapozhko reported that Russian drones triggered fires and inflicted structural damage on buildings within Brovary city in the Kyiv region, affecting both office spaces and warehouses.
With frontline engagements currently at a near standstill and diplomatic talks frozen, both Ukraine and Russia have heavily increased their long-distance strikes. This escalation has driven civilian casualties to their highest levels since the earliest months of the war in 2022. United Nations records indicate that July saw 437 civilian deaths in Ukraine—the highest monthly total since May 2022—while Russian authorities documented 79 civilian fatalities resulting from Ukrainian attacks during the same month.
