Newly updated Google Earth satellite images have revealed vast areas of Gaza transformed by Israel's destructive military offensive, reducing entire districts to rubble and bare ground. The updated imagery surfaced online on Sunday, sparking widespread shock among social media users over the extent of the devastation. Google has not yet specified when the images were published or made available.

The imagery displays neighborhoods turned into expanses of rubble from flattened buildings, while roads remain visible and mosques, schools, and other landmarks appear surrounded by extensive damage. Nathan Ruser, an analyst at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, wrote on X that the update shows the reality of Gaza in shocking resolution.

The southern city of Rafah features prominently in the latest images, with areas that previously contained dense rows of homes now appearing largely cleared. Additional views highlight sprawling concentrations of makeshift shelters set across open ground. In Gaza city, the satellite data shows heavy destruction at and around Al Shifa Hospital, significantly altering the surrounding urban landscape compared to previous imagery.

This devastation reflects the cumulative scale of destruction from the war in Gaza, which began following the Hamas-led attacks on southern Israel on October 7, 2023. A report published on August 12 by the UN Satellite Centre indicated that 82 percent of all Gaza structures sustained some level of damage, with two-thirds entirely destroyed.

Barry Andrews, an Irish Member of the European Parliament, drew attention to the imagery on X on Sunday, noting that the updated Google satellite images of Gaza are incredible for all to see. The post quickly amassed significant engagement, including around two million views, 18,000 likes, and thousands of reposts, accompanied by stark reactions from other platform users.

Palestinian journalist Abubaker Abed described the imagery as truly unfathomable, sharing on X that despite walking through much of the destruction in Gaza himself, he could not bear looking at the map. The visible destruction stems from ongoing military operations and intense Israeli bombardment across Gaza since October 7, 2023.

Screenshots and videos depicting Rafah, Khan Younis, and Gaza city quickly spread across social media as users compared the new views with older satellite imagery. While the precise capture date remains unconfirmed, reports indicate high-resolution imagery has been gathered throughout the year.

The October 7 attacks led by Hamas resulted in about 1,200 deaths in southern Israel and the abduction of around 250 hostages, according to Israeli authorities. In response, Israel launched a military offensive that Gaza's health authorities report has killed more than 74,000 Palestinians and injured tens of thousands more. Israel faces accusations of war crimes—including attacks on civilian infrastructure, forced restrictions on humanitarian aid, and forced displacement—allegations which Israel firmly denies.
