At least five men were arrested on Sunday morning on suspicion of the preparation of a terrorist act near a British Royal Air Force base in southern England. Armed officers detained the group following emergency calls from residents reporting three suspicious vehicles traveling towards the air base, according to a statement from London’s Metropolitan Police.
Counter Terrorism Policing confirmed they are leading the investigation into the overnight incident near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire. Calling the event deeply concerning, United Kingdom Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated that his government would take every necessary step to protect the public.
Based in Gloucestershire, RAF Fairford is a British military base hosting the United States Air Force’s 501st Combat Support Wing. The base has previously been used by US forces during attacks on Iran, deploying B-1 and B-2 bombers. Earlier in the year, then-Prime Minister Keir Starmer granted permission for defensive US action against Iranian missile sites from UK bases including Fairford and Diego Garcia.
Gloucestershire police received the initial call regarding the suspicious vehicles at 00:45 local time. Aerial footage later showed a bomb disposal robot operating near the vans, while police established a 400-metre cordon and advised about 85 households in Whelford to evacuate. A local resident recounted discovering her driveway blocked by a group of masked men before alerting authorities.
While the five suspects remain in custody, authorities have not yet disclosed their identities or nationalities. US President Donald Trump stated that the suspects were looking to do big damage at the airbase and noted that the US and UK had been working together on the matter. Meanwhile, officials emphasize that it remains unclear whether the suspects have any official connection to Iran, though Tehran has previously threatened US military bases involved in regional strikes.
