Israel has lashed out at the Netherlands after it banned the import of goods from illegal settlements, marking the latest escalation in a series of disputes with traditional allies over Israeli conduct. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar announced that Dutch diplomats serving in the Palestinian city of Ramallah in the occupied West Bank have seven days to surrender their Israeli diplomatic credentials.

This decision severely restricts their capacity to conduct diplomatic work with Palestinians. The measure follows the Netherlands' implementation of a ban on goods originating from Israeli businesses operating in occupied territories. "If the Netherlands wishes to continue representing its interests with the Palestinians, it may do so from Palestinian Authority territory, rather than from the territory of the State of Israel," Mr Saar stated on X.

The announcement came after Dutch customs officials searched the luggage of passengers arriving in Amsterdam on Israeli airline El Al to check for settlement goods. The new Dutch policy took effect last week and targets goods from the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Golan Heights, while leaving products from within Israel's sovereign borders unaffected. Intentional violations can lead to up to six years in prison.

The deteriorating relations reflect broader international friction over Israel's expanding settler movement, which critics say threatens the two-state solution. Since Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s far-right government took power in 2022, settlement expansion and settler-related violence have surged alongside mounting international criticism regarding the Gaza war.

This diplomatic fallout follows recent moves by other nations, including the UK, which faced the closure of its consulate in Jerusalem after announcing sanctions against West Bank settlements. Meanwhile, figures like US ambassador Mike Huckabee condemned the Dutch policy, while Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid criticized the government's handling of its international relations amid the growing diplomatic crisis.
