Five suspects arrested in connection with a suspected terrorism plot at a UK airbase used by the US to bomb Iran have been released on bail. The men, all British nationals in their 20s who live in London, were arrested with suspected explosives near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire.
Police confirmed they remain under investigation with strict conditions governing their movement and contact with others. “To be very clear, this does not mean the investigation is over,” stated Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor, the national head of counterterrorism policing.
Speaking on Monday afternoon, Mr Taylor noted that investigators are maintaining an open mind regarding whether the planned attack might have been orchestrated by proxies or individuals acting on behalf of a foreign state, potentially for financial gain rather than ideological terrorism.
The suspects were initially detained on Sunday following a report from a vigilant member of the public who spotted men in balaclavas near three white vans blocking a road close to the airbase. Meanwhile, the Iranian Embassy in the UK issued a statement dismissing speculation regarding state involvement as “unfounded and malicious.”
Defence Secretary Wes Streeting refrained from drawing a direct connection to Iran, though he acknowledged that “we know that Iran and their proxies wish to do us harm.” He also suggested that Donald Trump was correct regarding prior monitoring of the suspects, expressing pride in the professionalism recognized by the US President.
RAF Fairford has been utilized by the US Air Force for operations in Iran following authorization from Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Local residents reported heightened security measures around the area, where cordons and an 8km no-fly zone have been established. Police are currently pursuing multiple new lines of inquiry following overnight scene examinations.
