Gold prices experienced a significant decline, dropping 3.3 percent to a more than seven-week low of $4,146.51 per ounce on Monday as mounting fuel price concerns fueled inflation worries stemming from the conflict between the United States and Iran.

The combination of rising oil prices, a stronger US dollar, and higher Treasury yields created severe headwinds for the precious metal, driving values to their lowest point since August 5. US gold futures similarly tumbled by 3.3 percent to $4,178.40. While gold has historically served as an inflation hedge, rising interest rates have diminished its attractiveness as investors increasingly favor yield-bearing assets.

Sherif Othman, CEO of the Maryland-based Poise Investment Advisors, told Al Jazeera that while everyday citizens may feel little direct impact, investors who turned to gold will take a hit amid current high inflation rates. He noted that because gold generates no interest, rising Treasury yields prompt investors to look elsewhere, directly impacting its market value.

Earlier this month, the Fed raised benchmark rates by a quarter percentage point and indicated that at least one more rate hike is anticipated in the coming months. Meanwhile, the US dollar remained stable near a two-month high, and oil prices surged by roughly 3 percent after US President Donald Trump dismissed an Iranian proposal to resolve the conflict and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. These developments led multiple policymakers, including Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack, to caution that elevated inflation risks may necessitate further interest rate increases.

Jim Wyckoff, a market analyst at American Gold Exchange, described the converging pressures of higher Treasury yields and a robust US dollar as creating a "perfect storm" that is driving metal prices sharply downward. Other precious metals also suffered losses, with spot silver dropping 4.7 percent to $61.27 per ounce, platinum declining 2.9 percent to $1,726.30, and palladium falling 4.4 percent to $1,211.45.
