United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio has stated that a “foreign actor” was involved in a suspected bomb plot targeting a military facility in the United Kingdom utilized by the United States military.
Authorities previously detained five men, identified as British nationals from London in their early to mid-20s, following a report from a local farmer regarding three white vans approaching RAF Fairford, a British installation that accommodates United States bombers conducting missions concerning Iran.
Counterterrorism law enforcement officials announced they were examining potential connections to a foreign government regarding the suspected attack on the airbase. The detained individuals were subsequently granted bail.
During an appearance on the Hannity program on Fox News, Marco Rubio described the weekend event as an extremely serious matter. He stated, “What happened, what almost happened, what could have happened in the UK over the weekend is a very serious situation,” adding that it clearly involved the direction of a foreign actor.
Previously, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) designated RAF Fairford as a legitimate target. In response, the Iran embassy in London issued a statement rejecting and condemning speculations of state involvement, calling the claims “Iranophobia propaganda.”
Trump stated that authorities had kept the suspects under observation and claimed they intended to cause significant damage to the installation. Addressing the potential connection to Iran, Trump noted the case might be linked but provided no further details.
The United Kingdom granted permission for the United States to utilize RAF Fairford for defensive operations aimed at neutralizing missile threats at their source. Local residents in the Cotswolds region surrounding the facility observed heightened security measures and increased operational activity.
Authorities temporarily evacuated approximately 85 households from a nearby village before allowing residents to return. Tehran has previously cautioned London against permitting military installations to support United States operations, with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accusing London of endangering British lives.
