A Russian military aircraft has crashed in the eastern region of Amur, resulting in the deaths of at least six crew members while leaving one person hospitalized, according to an official statement from Russia’s Ministry of Defence.
Russian state media reported on Tuesday, citing the ministry, that the Tu-95 plane went down during a routine training flight in an uninhabited area of Amur, a region that shares a border with China. TASS, the state-run news agency, noted that the aircraft was flying without any ammunition at the time of the incident.
According to the Interfax news agency, Russia’s military announced that an Aerospace Forces commission has been dispatched directly to the crash site in order to investigate and establish all the circumstances surrounding the event. Meanwhile, unverified social media videos depicting the purported aftermath of the crash displayed large plumes of smoke billowing from the burning aircraft.
The Tupolev Tu-95 is a massive, Soviet-era bomber aircraft capable of carrying, launching, and delivering nuclear weapons. Having first flown in 1952 and entered service in 1956, the aircraft remains active today, frequently utilized by the Russian military for routine military exercises.
Incidents involving aircraft are not unprecedented in Russia’s Far East. In July of the previous year, an Antonov An-24 plane crashed amid poor weather conditions while traveling toward the town of Tynda, claiming the lives of all 48 individuals on board. Furthermore, in August 2021, a Mil Mi-8 went down in the Kamchatka Peninsula with 16 people aboard, the majority of whom were tourists.
