A grand prize of $1 million will be awarded for the finest AI-generated film during Dubai's premier social media summit. This prestigious award is part of a competition backed by TikTok parent company Bytedance and its Seedance AI creation platform, slated to take place at the 1 Billion Followers event from January 8 to 10.
During the gathering, the UAE's upcoming social media restrictions targeting children aged 15 and under will serve as a major point of discussion. Set to take effect in 2027, the new legislation mandates support and enforcement from schools, parents, and the broader community. Additionally, the growing commercialisation of content—transforming influence into a viable profession and income source—will be heavily scrutinized.
Saeed Al Eter, chairman of the UAE Government Media Office, stated during a preview event on Wednesday that the summit aims to solidify the UAE's position as a central hub for content creation. "It is going to be the biggest summit - with the biggest impact - to date," he remarked. He further emphasized that content creation has evolved into a standalone economy, which will be a primary focus of the discussions.
"Do we have a comprehensive economy, with legislative platforms, partnerships, and an ecosystem around it?" Al Eter questioned. "The content creator is no longer looking for followers. They are now following IP for strategic markets. There is a maturity; do we have this maturity in the Gulf? Have we reached the peak? This is what we're going to discuss."
The three-day conference will feature a dedicated Instagram day alongside a Creators Market designed to connect roughly 100 major companies with content creators for prospective commercial ventures.
