United States President Donald Trump is expected to announce $200bn in investments from South Korea, with $54bn designated for a liquefied natural gas (LNG) project in Alaska. The announcement, anticipated to be made from the White House on Wednesday, arrives as Trump works to defend the Republican Party’s economic record during a competitive midterm election season.
“Today, President Trump will announce major energy infrastructure investments that deliver on his day one promises to unleash American energy, unlock Alaska’s extraordinary resource potential, and accelerate America’s nuclear energy renaissance,” stated White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers. In a social media post, Rogers highlighted the $54bn LNG project as a long-stalled venture championed by Republican Dan Sullivan, who is working to defend his Senate seat in the November 3 election.
Alaska stands as one of several Republican-leaning states viewed as vulnerable by Democrats in the upcoming midterms, as Democrats push to flip both chambers of Congress in November. With only 35 seats up for grabs in the 100-member Senate, every race remains critical in determining party control. Sullivan currently finds himself in a narrow race against former Congress member Mary Peltola, a Democrat.
The newly announced investments stem from a broader $350bn trade and investment deal signed between the US and South Korea last November. Under the agreement, the US lowered tariffs on South Korean cars, auto parts, and other products, while South Korea committed $150bn to US shipbuilding and $200bn toward other strategic sectors.
The Alaska project involves a 1,300km (807-mile) natural gas pipeline linking the oil-rich North Slope tundra along the Arctic Ocean to a southern export terminal. South Korea currently ranks as the world’s third-largest LNG importer, trailing only China and Japan. Wednesday’s event will also feature announcements regarding South Korean investments in nuclear power plants and a 6-gigawatt power generation facility in Texas, another state featuring a vulnerable Senate race where Democratic hopeful James Talarico is competing against Republican Ken Paxton for an open seat.
South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources noted that the gas-fired power plant in Encinal, Texas, represents the first project selected under its $200bn strategic investment program. Since beginning his second term in 2025, Trump has pursued new trade agreements internationally while utilizing tariff threats as leverage.
Relations between the US and close Asia Pacific ally South Korea have faced recent strains, highlighted by a reduction in joint military exercises and a decline in South Korean public approval of the US. Despite these tensions, figures like Congressman John Moolenaar of Michigan have stressed the indispensable nature of the alliance as a counterweight to China's regional influence.
