A flydubai pilot has earned widespread praise for averting a major disaster on flight FZ 1073. Indian aviator Smit Machchhar received public recognition from the Israeli Prime Minister for his heroic actions during the incident. India's embassy in Riyadh confirmed that he is currently in a stable condition.

While exact details regarding the Wednesday morning Dubai to Tel Aviv flight remain somewhat unclear, reports indicate that the Boeing 737 dropped nearly 20,000ft during an altercation inside the cockpit. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that one pilot allegedly attacked the other and attempted to crash the aircraft with passengers on board. He identified Indian pilot Smit Machchhar as the captain who was targeted by his colleague.

Praising Mr Machchhar's extraordinary bravery, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu noted that the majority of passengers on board were Israelis. According to his statement on X, despite sustaining serious stab wounds, the captain fought back, opened the cockpit door, and allowed passengers and crew to subdue the attacker, ultimately preventing a catastrophic mid-air disaster. Israel's parliament speaker Amir Ohana also shared his support on X, stating that their thoughts are with the pilot and his family.

Footage circulated widely in Israeli media showed the first officer being restrained by passengers. Off-duty flydubai flight crew members stepped in to take control of the aircraft and landed safely in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. Authorities from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Israel are currently conducting a joint investigation. No official information regarding the first officer has been made public, and earlier media reports regarding the nationalities of both pilots were incorrect. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was the first to disclose many of these details, a move that faced political backlash in Israel amid accusations of politicizing the event ahead of an election campaign. Meanwhile, media outlets in both Israel and India have widely published the captain's picture and name.
