Unidentified gunmen ambushed a vehicle in Syria on Wednesday, leaving at least seven people dead and injuring at least four others, according to state media reports. The assault targeted a bus carrying company employees home after completing their shifts as it crossed the Masyaf Bridge in the western countryside of Homs province, the official Sana news agency stated.

Authorities confirmed that an investigation has been initiated to identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice. Emergency responders transferred the wounded to various hospitals around the city of Homs, while security forces secured the scene, where broken glass and bloodstains remained visible inside the vehicle.

Homs Internal Security Forces Commander Brig Gen Bassem Mohammad Shaaban condemned the incident, telling Sana that the action was a cowardly attempt to destabilize the security that authorities have worked to establish across the governorate. He emphasized that the crime would not go unpunished.

In the wake of the fall of the Assad regime in December 2024, Syrian authorities have faced ongoing challenges in maintaining security following more than 13 years of civil war. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that all the victims were Alawites, noting that the incident has heightened concerns among minority communities despite official assurances from Islamist authorities. No group has claimed responsibility, and a clear motive remains undetermined.

Separately, the state electricity company reported an explosion earlier on Wednesday along a gas pipeline at the Tishreen plant, which temporarily halted essential gas supplies for power generation and injured two individuals, as reported by the state-run Ekhbariya TV station. The Syrian Civil Defence confirmed that responders successfully brought the resulting fire under control and commenced cooling operations at the site. Although the government of Syrian President Ahmed Al Sharaa has disrupted numerous armed cells, deadly shootings and explosions continue to occur across Damascus and other regions.
