The International Criminal Court (ICC) has officially terminated its contract with the French health and life insurer Axa, effective immediately, and is transitioning to a new insurance provider. This development, initially reported by the Financial Times, coincides with escalating pressure from United States President Donald Trump against the Hague-based institution.

Reports from the Wall Street Journal indicated that the White House was preparing potential sanctions against the ICC following the court's consideration of an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Previously, the Trump administration enacted sanctions against numerous ICC judges and prosecutors, alongside the ICC president in August. During the United Nations General Assembly, President Trump criticized the ICC as a rogue entity and called for nations to withdraw their support.

Discussions between Axa and the ICC spanned several months as both parties attempted to navigate the looming threat of US sanctions, which could potentially block transactions involving the US dollar. Ultimately, the two sides were unable to reach an agreement without relying on a blocking statute, a legal mechanism meant to protect European companies from foreign sanctions. Consequently, an ICC spokesperson confirmed that Axa and the court mutually agreed to end their contractual relationship.
