A US official has confirmed to Al Jazeera that a significant military deployment is underway near Iran, involving three carriers and two landing groups.

The official stated that the Roosevelt strike group and the Makin Island force, carrying 2,000 Marines, departed from San Diego. The complete military buildup is scheduled to be finalized by November.

Meanwhile, the UK Maritime Trade Operations reported that a 2.5-million-barrel supertanker sustained a fire after being struck by an unknown projectile while transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
