The United States is deploying a third aircraft carrier strike group to the Middle East near Iran as the conflict enters its eighth month, with both sides weighing potential escalation and diplomatic engagement, a US official told Al Jazeera. Thousands of additional troops are also heading to the region just a month before the November US midterm elections, which could heavily impact US President Donald Trump’s Republican Party due to the deep unpopularity of the war.

A US official confirmed that the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group departed its San Diego base on Sunday, followed closely by the Makin Island Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) carrying more than 2,000 Marines. According to The Wall Street Journal, these naval deployments could involve between 9,000 and 10,000 additional US personnel, including sailors and Marines. By the end of November, three aircraft carriers and two amphibious landing groups will be positioned near Iran, providing President Donald Trump with a broader range of tactical options.

Al Jazeera’s Tanya Noury, reporting from Washington, noted that the new deployment—featuring F-35 fighter jets—will augment the approximately 50,000 US service members already stationed in the region. Pentagon and White House sources indicate the objective is to maintain military options for President Donald Trump regardless of diplomatic developments, with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stating that forces are prepared should new attacks be ordered.

The US maintains a long-standing military presence across at least 19 locations in the Middle East, including eight permanent bases in Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. Since early February, the US has deployed more than 120 aircraft to the region, marking the largest surge in airpower since the 2003 Iraq War. Reinforcements have also included the Tripoli Amphibious Ready Group, the Boxer Amphibious Ready Group, and about 2,000 soldiers from the 82nd Airborne Division’s Immediate Response Force.

While the direct implications of the latest deployment remain uncertain, President Donald Trump suggested in a Time magazine interview that increasing bombing campaigns against Iran after the midterm elections is possible. Meanwhile, indirect peace talks mediated by Qatar have stalled. Iran recently proposed a seven-day roadmap to reopen the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for lifted sanctions, unfrozen assets, and an end to strikes, but the proposal was rejected by the Trump administration. Amid ongoing economic pressure and recent sanctions targeting Iran's automotive and rail conglomerates, President Donald Trump warned that Tehran must reach a deal soon or face severe consequences.
