Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty firmly stated on Saturday that Egypt has never meddled in Ethiopia’s internal affairs, emphasizing that state sovereignty and non-interference remain core pillars of Egypt's foreign policy.

During an interview with the “Al-Qahera News” channel, Abdelatty asserted that Egypt holds no responsibility for events unfolding within Ethiopia. He added that attempting to blame external actors for domestic problems is completely unacceptable and hinders any path toward stability.

According to the Foreign Minister, these statements from Ethiopia are merely a tactic to distract from its own domestic challenges and evade severe internal crises.

Escalating Diplomatic Tensions

These remarks follow a sharp rise in diplomatic friction between Cairo and Addis Ababa. On Thursday, Ethiopia declared a member of the Egyptian embassy in Addis Ababa persona non grata, demanding their departure within 48 hours without providing a reason. In response, Egypt took reciprocal action by expelling a counselor from the Ethiopian embassy in Cairo under the same 48-hour timeline.

A well-informed Egyptian source reaffirmed on Saturday that Cairo firmly rejects being pulled into Ethiopia's internal struggles. The source reiterated Egypt's dedication to state sovereignty, non-interference, and regional good-neighborly relations, while criticizing efforts to obscure the true domestic motives driving events in Ethiopia.

Meanwhile, the African Union urged Egypt, Ethiopia, and Eritrea to show restraint, de-escalate ongoing tensions, and pursue peaceful dialogue. However, this appeal caught an Egyptian source by surprise, who viewed the statement as improperly involving Cairo in what is fundamentally an internal Ethiopian matter.
