President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton will spearhead the newly created "Super Intelligence Force" to direct artificial intelligence policy across the United States. The initiative was initially proposed by Mr Trump in September amid ongoing discussions surrounding safety and regulatory oversight.

Mr Clayton assumed office as the ninth director of national intelligence in August, succeeding Tulsi Gabbard. His official biography notes that he manages the implementation of the National Intelligence Programme and coordinates intelligence operations throughout the community. Previously, Mr Clayton held the position of chairman of the Security Exchange Commission from 2017 to 2020.

Announcing the move on Truth Social, Mr Trump stated that the task force will coordinate federal efforts to maintain American leadership in super intelligence, a technological shift described as surpassing the scale of the Industrial Revolution and the internet. The administration views the initiative as vital for protecting national interests and securing long-term economic dominance against global competitors like China.

Despite the administration's enthusiasm and an unprecedented investment boom, the rapid expansion of the sector has faced mounting scrutiny. Concerns persist regarding rogue AI models compromising digital assets, potential disruptions to the labour market, and the environmental footprint of data centre construction. While public polls indicate growing caution, Mr Trump has dismissed widespread fears regarding AI as "a hoax" and expressed confidence in the industry's ability to self-police.
