An Israeli strike on a seaside cafe in Gaza on Tuesday resulted in the deaths of six people, including a child, according to Palestinian officials, while others were left stranded in the water.

The air strike targeted Gaza city's fishing harbour just a day after US envoy Jared Kushner concluded inconclusive peace talks with representatives of Israel and Hamas.

The Israeli military stated that it targeted “several Hamas commanders” who were allegedly planning attacks against its troops in Gaza. Palestinian officials confirmed that a child was among the fatalities, with disturbing images from the scene showing a child's shoes resting in blood amidst the wreckage.

Additional individuals sustained injuries, and some victims “fell into the port basin,” prompting immediate rescue operations, as reported by Palestinian official media. The port area has transformed into a major displacement camp for Palestinian families throughout the ongoing conflict that commenced in October 2023.

Social media footage captured Palestinians administering aid to the wounded at the cafe and surrounding tents, with several casualties subsequently transported to local hospitals.

Palestinian officials report that over 1,200 individuals have died in Israeli strikes since the conclusion of the previous ceasefire last October, alongside the recovery of 800 additional bodies during that period.

Optimism regarding potential advancements on US President Donald Trump's peace plan emerged last month following the introduction of a phased strategy requiring Hamas to surrender its weapons in exchange for an Israeli withdrawal. However, Israel has not yet endorsed the agreement.

Mr Kushner, who serves as Mr Trump's son-in-law, departed Jerusalem on Monday without securing a major breakthrough following two days of negotiations with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Hamas leaders, and regional mediators.

An Israeli official noted that Mr Netanyahu reiterated that the military would persist with its operations in Gaza and ruled out any troop withdrawal. Nevertheless, Israel agreed during the discussions led by Mr Kushner to establish working groups focused on the demilitarisation of Gaza and the enhancement of sanitation infrastructure within the territory.
