Locally manufactured mobile phones in Egypt have experienced recent price increases, according to Mohamed Talaat, Head of the Telecommunications and Mobile Division at the Federation of Egyptian Chambers of Commerce (FEDCOC).
Speaking on Hya TV channel, Talaat explained that the surge is driven by the necessary importation of certain components from abroad. Essential parts such as RAM and ROM—which make up 20 percent of a mobile device—are not produced in Egypt. Instead, they are manufactured by a select group of global companies that control pricing, a trend amplified by these firms shifting their focus toward larger components tied to artificial intelligence.
Talaat noted that component costs have been climbing since the beginning of the year, with price fluctuations happening every ten days, directly impacting the final retail price. While Egyptian companies account for 50 percent of the manufacturing process, the remaining half relies on imported parts. He emphasized that this is a global challenge rather than an issue isolated to Egypt.
