A deadly blast at a petroleum storage facility located at the Netherlands' Rotterdam port resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries on Thursday, according to officials. The exact cause of the explosion remains unknown at this time. A spokesperson representing major energy commodities trading company Gunvor stated that an incident took place while maintenance work was being conducted on a storage tank. Meanwhile, a police spokesperson confirmed there are currently no immediate indications of sabotage, though all possible scenarios remain under investigation.
As Europe's largest port, Rotterdam houses numerous oil refineries, liquefied natural gas terminals, and petrochemical facilities. Prominent energy majors operating within the port include Shell, Exxon Mobil, BP, and Gunvor Energy. The explosion occurred at approximately 11:30 am. Gunvor affirmed its full cooperation with local authorities regarding the incident.
Shell reported that its operations at the port were completely unaffected by the blast. Similarly, a Rotterdam Port spokesperson confirmed that liquefied natural gas terminals sustained no impact. In a separate occurrence, ExxonMobil shut down all units at its 191,000-barrels-per-day Rotterdam refinery as a result of a power cut, as noted by consultancy Wood Mackenzie in an alert sent to clients and reviewed by Reuters. ExxonMobil did not immediately provide a response to a request for comment. Furthermore, Rotterdam port authorities clarified that there is no connection linking the blast to the power cut.
