UAE security authorities have successfully thwarted 14 attempts to smuggle narcotics through airports across the country, seizing over 300kg of illicit drugs in a span of less than two months.

The successful operations were conducted jointly by the National Anti-Narcotics Agency and the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security, operating through its General Directorate of Port Security, as reported by state news agency Wam.

Several suspects hailing from various countries in Europe and Asia were arrested in connection with these operations. Intelligence regarding suspicious consignments and travel routes was proactively shared prior to the arrival of flights and shipments at airports in the UAE, allowing specialist teams to respond immediately upon arrival.

Dubai Customs recently thwarted another plot aimed at smuggling 1.2 tonnes of 'mind-altering' drugs. UAE Customs highlighted that the country utilizes advanced technical detection systems and smart screening technology to accurately and swiftly identify suspicious substances hidden within baggage and transit consignments.

These modern systems frequently operate without requiring manual inspections, helping to reduce inspection times while simultaneously boosting detection rates for complex smuggling methods. Previously, The National reported that UAE Customs also intercepted an attempt to smuggle 16.2kg of crystal meth concealed inside a vehicle's tyre at a border crossing.
