A B-1B Lancer at the RAF Fairford airbase in Gloucestershire, UK, highlights the strategic movement of US military aircraft. Recently, a dozen B-1B bombers departed from Royal Air Force (RAF) Fairford in western England to return to the United States, concluding the base's temporary function as a launchpad for US strikes on Iran that began on February 28.

Located roughly 160km (100 miles) west of London, RAF Fairford serves as the US Air Force's sole European airfield capable of hosting heavy bombers, functioning as a vital forward operating location. The departure followed a security scare over the past two weeks, during which six individuals were arrested on suspicion of terrorism before being released on bail.

US President Donald Trump stated that the relocation was prompted by security threats linked to Iran. Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio downplayed any direct connection to the alleged plot, describing rotations as routine. The UK police investigation involved arrests in late September and early October, though Iran has strongly denied any involvement in the alleged schemes.

The US Air Force currently relies on three primary bomber models, with a fourth in development:

  • B-52 Stratofortress: The oldest model, built in the early 1960s, serves as the largest US bomber capable of carrying nuclear weapons and cruise missiles.
  • B-1B Lancer: Entering service in the mid-1980s, it is the fastest of the fleet, capable of supersonic speeds and carrying the largest conventional payload. These were the aircraft stationed at and recently departed from Fairford.
  • B-2 Spirit: A stealth flying-wing bomber designed to evade air defences, capable of carrying heavy conventional and nuclear munitions.
  • B-21 Raider: A next-generation stealth bomber currently undergoing flight testing ahead of expected delivery.

Permanently based at five main airbases across the United States—including Barksdale Air Force Base, Minot Air Force Base, Dyess Air Force Base, Ellsworth Air Force Base, and Whiteman Air Force Base—these aircraft rely on extensive infrastructure for operations. For international missions, the US utilizes forward operating locations such as Andersen Air Force Base in Guam and Diego Garcia, alongside temporary Bomber Task Force deployments to allied nations worldwide.
