Mali's Tuareg rebels have announced a temporary withdrawal from the strategic northern town of Kidal. The Azawad Liberation Front (FLA), a coalition established in 2024 that unites Tuareg and northern separatist factions, released a statement on Tuesday confirming a controlled retreat from Kidal.

This decision comes just six months after the group captured the town, triggered by renewed air strikes from Mali's military, which is supported by Russian fighters. The statement emphasized that the methodical withdrawal was an operational measure designed to preserve human and logistical capabilities without direct combat.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Malian military reported launching extensive air and ground operations around Kidal. According to military statements, the objectives are to track down and neutralize armed groups, dismantle supply networks, and restore lasting security and free movement across the region. Pro-government forces and Russian paramilitaries subsequently re-entered Kidal on Tuesday afternoon, security sources confirmed.

Mali has faced ongoing conflict since 2012, when a Tuareg separatist rebellion was co-opted by al-Qaeda-linked Islamist militants, later consolidating under Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) in 2017. Although the secular nationalist FLA seeks independence for the Azawad region and JNIM maintains Islamist objectives, both have formed a joint alliance against the military-led government, which took power following a 2021 coup and subsequently replaced French and United Nations forces with Russian paramilitaries.
