Capital Group, a major firm managing $3.6 trillion in assets, has officially secured a licence from the Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Abu Dhabi's ADGM. This milestone enables the company to operate as a regulated investment manager and significantly expand its operations throughout the region.

The development follows an earlier announcement in May regarding the establishment of Capital Group's first Middle East office in Abu Dhabi. To support regional clients, the company has relocated associates from North America, Europe, and Asia. According to a statement released on Wednesday, Capital Group is now fully authorized to conduct trading, investment management, and distribution activities within Abu Dhabi's financial centre.

Benno Klingenberg-Timm, head of the Abu Dhabi office and head of institutional for Europe and Asia at Capital Group, emphasized the strategic importance of the move. "Establishing a regulated presence in Abu Dhabi brings us closer to our clients and to the investment opportunities across the Middle East, a region where we have been active for many years," he said. He further noted that the company boasts a meaningful presence from day one, equipped with on-the-ground investment, operational, and client-facing capabilities that reflect confidence in the area's long-term growth.

This expansion highlights a broader trend of global investment firms establishing operations in Abu Dhabi. As the largest international financial centre in the Middle East and Africa by active licences, ADGM continues to attract prominent global institutions.

Other financial heavyweights are also making moves in the region. New York-based alternative investment firm New Mountain Capital announced on Tuesday that it is opening an office in ADGM. Founded in 1999, New Mountain manages about $60 billion in assets across private equity, credit, and net lease investment strategies. Adam Weinstein, president and chief operating officer, stated that a local presence will deepen existing regional relationships and foster new partnerships.

Additionally, European asset manager Eurazeo and global private markets firm Pantheon both recently opened offices in ADGM to tap into growing investor demand across the Gulf. Operating from Abu Dhabi grants global money managers direct access to some of the world's largest sovereign wealth funds, family offices, and institutional partners.

The UAE capital has successfully attracted a multitude of high-profile companies in recent months, including Blue Owl Capital, Vista Equity Partners, Man Group, Barings, Bain Capital, Cantor, and Adapt Investment Managers. Collectively, asset managers establishing operations in ADGM during the first half of the year oversee more than $2.1 trillion in global assets under management.

Commenting on the influx, Ahmed Al Zaabi, chairman of ADGM, stated that Capital Group's decision reflects the overall strength of Abu Dhabi's financial ecosystem and ADGM's rising status as a premier international financial hub for global institutions seeking long-term opportunities.
