A Palestinian man has been killed and 16 others injured following a violent assault by settlers backed by Israeli forces in the northern occupied West Bank, according to Palestinian authorities.

Ali Hassan Yasser al-Bazzari, a 44-year-old resident of Burqa northwest of Nablus, lost his life during the incident while Palestinians were harvesting olives on agricultural land near Burqa, west of Nablus, the Palestinian Ministry of Health announced on Wednesday.

Reports from the Wafa news agency, citing local sources, indicated that several wounded individuals, including a woman, were transported to medical facilities in Tulkarem and Nablus.

The Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) reported that its emergency teams provided treatment to five individuals in the vicinity. This included two people with gunshot wounds and three who sustained injuries from physical beatings, as noted by Wafa.

Furthermore, the PRCS stated that Israeli forces obstructed ambulance crews attempting to access the wounded, temporarily detaining three paramedics alongside a volunteer.

Reporting from Ramallah, Al Jazeera's Nida Ibrahim highlighted that the violence coincides with a surge in attacks targeting Palestinians during the ongoing olive harvest period.

"If you just go to pick your olives now… you could not return from the journey. It could be dangerous, not only because of Israeli restrictions against farmers going to their lands, but also because of the armed Israeli settlers who continue to assault Palestinians," Ibrahim stated.

She noted that these assaults have fundamentally disrupted what traditionally serves as a vital social and economic period for Palestinian families.

"In October, usually Palestinians take days off from their jobs and go to the land, try and pick their olives because this is supposed to be a joyous season," she added.

According to Ibrahim, the attacks have severely impacted agricultural output, with at least 45,000 olive trees destroyed throughout the occupied West Bank over the course of the year. Additional incidents involving Israeli forces and settlers attacking Palestinians during the olive harvest were reported near Anata in the central occupied West Bank by Wafa.
