Indian opposition leader Rahul Gandhi was detained for the third time in two days during a demonstration in New Delhi calling for the resignation of the election chief over a contentious revision of voter lists. Gandhi and fellow opposition lawmakers were apprehended by police on Wednesday while marching toward Jantar Mantar, a designated protest site in the capital. A live broadcast on the YouTube channel of Gandhi’s Congress Party captured police escorting him into a vehicle and driving away, alongside several other lawmakers and protesters.
Opposition groups, their student affiliates, and the “Cockroach” youth movement have demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, accusing the election body of favoring Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. India’s Election Commission has purged more than 130 million names from voter lists, prompting millions of appeals. Protesters contend that these revisions have disproportionately targeted opposition supporters while retaining voters favorable to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s party. Both the commission and the government have rejected these accusations, maintaining that the process is designed solely to eliminate duplicate and ineligible entries.
Ahead of his detention, Gandhi addressed reporters to criticize the police intervention and reaffirm the movement's demands. The ongoing demonstrations pose a fresh political challenge for Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his third term, following previous youth-led protests that resulted in the resignation of his education minister.
