Thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of Rio de Janeiro in a student-led protest against presidential candidate Flavio Bolsonaro and the growing influence of Brazil’s far right. The march occurred on Wednesday, following the first round of the country’s presidential race where far-right Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, secured the most votes.
Bolsonaro captured 47 percent of the vote, leading his closest opponent, incumbent left-wing President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who garnered 45 percent support. Because neither candidate achieved the necessary 50 percent threshold, they are set to compete in a run-off election on October 25. The results have sparked anxieties that Brazil might join other Latin American nations in shifting political power from the left to the right.
Protesters filled downtown Rio with signs displaying messages such as “Never again Bolsonaro,” “No to the father, no to the son,” “Dictatorship never again,” and “Get out Bolsonaro.” Participants expressed deep concerns for democracy and civil rights under a potential far-right administration.
Former President Jair Bolsonaro governed the country from 2019 to 2023, with his single term marked by various far-right policy controversies, support for Brazil's past military dictatorship, and attacks on the electoral system that resulted in an eight-year ban from holding office. Currently, he is serving a 27-year prison sentence after being convicted of plotting to overturn his 2022 election defeat.
Despite this, Senator Flavio Bolsonaro has maintained his father's endorsement and supports granting him amnesty. The student-led demonstrations also featured calls to protect public education and defend democracy, with marchers proceeding through city boulevards toward Cinelandia square ahead of the upcoming October 25 run-off.
