Britain will maintain its diplomatic mission in East Jerusalem despite an Israeli directive to shut down the consulate, Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband announced on Thursday. This decision prevents an immediate diplomatic crisis between the two allies while negotiations over the conflict persist.

Mr Miliband stated that the facility will stay operational and independent under a new title, “UK mission, Jerusalem”, continuing its support for Palestinians across Jerusalem and the broader occupied Palestinian territories. “Following discussions with the Israeli government, our consulate general building will not be closing,” Mr Miliband said. “It will be known as UK mission, Jerusalem, and will be independent and operational.”

The announcement followed the overnight removal of signs and plaques identifying the site as the British consulate general by workers, though the British flag remained hoisted above the property. The tension stems from recent British sanctions targeting Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.

Despite withdrawing several diplomats, staff members, and their families in recent weeks, Mr Miliband emphasized the government's commitment to restoring its diplomatic footprint, stating, “We will work to build back up our presence in the coming months.”

With a history dating back nearly 200 years—predating the founding of Israel in 1948—the consulate manages diplomatic relations with Palestinians in Jerusalem, the West Bank, and Gaza, alongside offering consular assistance.

Israel had demanded the consulate's closure within a 30-day window following British measures that included import bans on goods originating from Israeli settlements and sanctions against entities and individuals backing settlement activities. While the United Nations and the majority of nations view these settlements as illegal under international law, Israel rejects this interpretation.

Addressing rumors of potential retaliation, Mr Miliband dismissed the notion that Britain would expel Israeli diplomats. “We will not take reciprocal action while such discussions are under way and credible,” he noted, averting what would have been an unprecedented escalation between close security and intelligence partners.

This standoff highlights a continuous decline in UK-Israel relations, driven by British criticism of Israel's military actions in Gaza and settler violence against Palestinians in the West Bank. Meanwhile, the administration of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has characterized Britain's Labour government as displaying hostility toward Israel.
