Global ports operator DP World has entered into a 15-year concession agreement with Bangladesh's Chittagong Port to manage a newly established terminal, a move projected to significantly enhance economic activity across the South Asian nation. Announced in a statement by the Dubai-based company on Thursday, this public-private partnership concerning the New Mooring Container Terminal (NMCT) is designed to elevate supply chain efficiency and bolster the trade and logistics infrastructure of Bangladesh.
Per the terms of the agreement, which encompasses the management of the overflow container yard as well, the ownership of the NMCT stays firmly with the Chittagong Port Authority. While financial figures regarding the investment remain undisclosed by DP World, executive chairman Essa Kazim noted that the collaboration grants the terminal access to DP World's extensive global network, spanning ports, infrastructure, and supply chain services.
“Bangladesh is an increasingly important trading and manufacturing economy, and we are committed to supporting its continued development,” Kazim stated. This joint initiative originates from an initial pact established between the Dubai government and the Public-Private Partnership Authority under the Bangladesh Prime Minister's Office, formulated to drive strategic infrastructure advancement.
The comprehensive development strategy features infrastructural and civil upgrades, the implementation of digital technologies, and operational refinements aimed at optimizing cargo handling and accommodating rising trade volumes. Teaming up with the Chittagong Port Authority, DP World plans to target crucial sectors like berth planning, yard management, equipment utilization, preventive maintenance, safety protocols, and sustainability.
Furthermore, the alliance aims to foster local workforce training and integrate international operational standards. SM Moniruzzaman, chairman of the Chittagong Port Authority, emphasized that the partnership will reinforce Bangladesh's standing in regional and global supply chains while establishing a robust framework for long-term economic growth and investment.
DP World currently boasts a worldwide handling capacity of 110 million 20-foot-equivalent units, overseeing roughly 10 percent of daily global trade. Backed by an approximate $10 billion investment in a logistics network covering 85 countries, the company continues to pursue international expansion, marked by recent projects such as a $90 million upgrade to Angola's Port of Luanda and prospective ventures in Nigeria.
