A recent report by The New York Times has sparked intense debate and criticism within the Republican Party regarding the actions of key political operatives for US President Donald Trump. James Blair and Chris LaCivita reportedly visited pro-Russian politician Milorad Dodik in Bosnia and Herzegovina ahead of parliamentary elections, receiving hundreds of thousands of dollars for their advisory work.

Blair currently leads MAGA Inc, Trump's primary fundraising organization, while LaCivita serves as a senior adviser to Trump. Neither Blair nor LaCivita has commented publicly on the visit, which has drawn sharp scrutiny over potential conflicts of interest and ties to foreign figures close to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Milorad Dodik, the leader of the Bosnian Serb entity Republika Srpska, met with Vladimir Putin in Moscow shortly before the general election. Despite facing a legal ban from formally running due to his defiance of international peace envoy Christian Schmidt, Dodik's nationalist SNSD party secured major victories in the regional elections. Dodik has long advocated for the secession of Republika Srpska and its unification with Serbia, raising regional tensions.

Documents filed with the US Department of Justice reveal that Republika Srpska has funneled more than $4m since the beginning of 2025 to US lobbyists and political operatives linked to Trump. While the Constitutional Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina ruled these lobbying activities unconstitutional, local experts suggest such efforts are likely to continue under different frameworks.

The revelations have generated friction within political circles. Steve Bannon criticized the operatives, while President Donald Trump initially stated he was unaware of their external engagements before later defending their status as consultants permitted to have multiple clients. Analysts note that while Dodik gained valuable proximity to Washington through the arrangement, the deepening ties between Trump's inner circle and figures aligned with Moscow present significant political complications.
