Londoners are heading to the polls on Thursday for a crucial by-election in the electoral district of Holborn and St Pancras, where the Green Party is presenting a significant challenge to Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s Labour Party.
Zack Polanski, leader of Britain’s left-wing Greens, is among the candidates running to secure the parliamentary seat left vacant following the resignation of former Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Labour has maintained continuous control of the seat since its establishment in 1983.
The election has transformed into a closely watched two-horse race between Labour and the Greens, with thousands of campaign activists actively canvassing in recent weeks. This vote serves as an early indicator of whether Prime Minister Andy Burnham can successfully rebuild voter trust in Labour, whose support among left-wing constituents previously declined over the conflict in Gaza.
The contest also provides an opportunity for Burnham to halt the momentum gained by the Greens under Zack Polanski, the 43-year-old leader who took charge in September last year. Green Party advances across London contributed to Labour's poor performance in the May local elections, ultimately leading to Keir Starmer's resignation on July 20 and Burnham's succession.
In response, Burnham has adopted a firmer stance on Israel and aims to counter the Green surge by presenting a more left-wing platform for the UK. The Green Party's candidate, Zack Polanski, is competing against Labour’s Sagal Abdi-Wali, a local council leader and former child refugee from Somalia who arrived in Britain in the 1990s and is anticipated to win.
Polling stations are set to close at 10pm local time (21:00 GMT), with the final election results anticipated during the early hours of Friday. The candidate ballot also features Barmy Brunch representing the Official Monster Raving Loony Party, Ewan Cameron from the Conservative Party, independent candidate Tom Darwood, Clare Fischer of the Climate Party, George Galloway from the Workers Party, Tyler Johnson representing Restore Britain, Briony Anne Lonbay Kapoor of Rejoin EU, Peter Newman from Reform UK, Ketankumar Pipaliya representing UK VOICE, Jonathan Silberman of the Communist League, Helen Spiby-Vann from the Christian Peoples Alliance, Patrick Thomas Stillman representing the Liberal Democrats, and Ben Walker from UKIP.
