Apple signaled on Thursday that it is gearing up for a smart-home product announcement on October 13, releasing a promotional video featuring someone embroidering the company's iconic multicoloured logo. The caption featured the words "Welcome home," seemingly confirming months of speculation that Apple will unveil a new home device during next Tuesday's event, scheduled for 9am Washington time (5pm GST).
"The upcoming display-based device could become a central interface for controlling smart-home products, accessing content and services, and interacting with Apple’s AI capabilities, potentially giving Apple a stronger foothold in the smart-home ecosystem," stated Anshika Jain, principal analyst for the technology market analysis firm Counterpoint.
Ms Jain noted that indicators also point to a second announcement: the introduction of a refreshed HomePod, a Siri-enabled speaker originally launched in 2018. "With Apple Intelligence and a more capable Siri, the company is positioning HomePod as an entry point into an AI-powered home ecosystem," she remarked.
However, unlike the massive success of the iPhone, Mac, and MacBook, Ms Jain does not anticipate an immediate blockbuster for the updated speaker. "Shipment growth is likely to remain modest in low single digits YoY [year on year] as the market continues to face saturation and longer replacement cycles," she explained, adding that Apple may be aiming to solidify its loyal customer base rather than chase massive hardware volumes.
Analysts and technology experts point out that Apple has filed numerous HomePod-related patents over the years, a development timeline consistent with the company's cautious approach to product releases. Additional speculation suggests Apple might introduce new versions of its Apple TV console, which has seen gradual updates since its 2007 debut.
Throughout its 50-year history, Apple has occasionally ventured beyond computing and smartphones. Past hardware experiments included the PowerCD player in 1993, the Pippin gaming console created in partnership with Japan's Bandai in 1995, and the iPod HiFi speaker launched in 2007 under the direction of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs—all of which faced limited commercial success amid stiff competition.
Media reports indicate that Apple is collaborating with Korea-based LG Electronics to ensure third-party accessories like doorbells, thermostats, and locks integrate seamlessly with the products slated for Tuesday's unveiling. Apple previously partnered with LG for the launch of early iMac models in 1998.
This event marks Apple's second major product showcase in less than a month, following last month's debut of the foldable smartphone, iPhone Duo, which arrives in stores on October 16 with shipments anticipated by October 23.
