An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent has shot a man in the Marble Hill neighbourhood of New York City, Mayor Zohran Mamdani said, calling the incident an “unconscionable and incredibly serious situation”.
In a statement published on X, Mamdani stated that early reports on Thursday indicated agents surrounded the man and a five-year-old child in his car before discharging multiple rounds. The child is believed to have escaped physical harm, he added.
Mamdani noted he had spoken with President Donald Trump and would demand an immediate halt to all ICE enforcement operations within the city. “I will not stand by while ICE agents terrorize our communities,” he remarked.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported that ICE officers were conducting a “targeted enforcement operation” in the Bronx around 4pm to apprehend a man identified as a Dominican national with a criminal conviction. According to the department, an officer “discharged his weapon” resulting in injuries to the man, and the incident remains under investigation.
The New York Police Department confirmed in a statement that the man is conscious and currently receiving medical treatment at a nearby hospital.

The shooting follows months of escalating criticism directed at the agency. In January, federal immigration agents shot and killed two US citizens in Minneapolis: Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, was killed by an ICE agent on January 7, and Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old intensive care nurse, was shot by a US border agent.
Following the killing of Good, Trump officials characterized her as a “domestic terrorist,” despite video footage casting doubt on claims that she attempted to run over an agent. The federal government subsequently barred local authorities from the investigation, dismissed calls for a civil rights probe, and deployed hundreds of additional agents to Minnesota, increasing the total force there to 3,000 as protests expanded across hundreds of US cities.
President Trump attributed the shift in public perception regarding the immigration agency to unfair media coverage, encouraging DHS and ICE to actively publicize the “violent criminals” they apprehend.
ICE currently faces a mandate to achieve one million deportations annually. The agency doubled its personnel to exceed 22,000 agents by January, establishing itself as the most heavily funded federal law enforcement agency with approximately $75bn allocated over four years under a tax bill signed by Trump last year.
