The UK’s ruling Labour party successfully defended its seat against Green Party leader Zack Polanski in a by-election triggered by former prime minister Keir Starmer's resignation as an MP. Labour’s candidate, local council leader Sagal Abdi-Wali, delivered a powerful victory speech emphasizing diversity in Britain. Arriving in the country as a child refugee from Somalia, she expressed her hope that the election result would help others like her feel a sense of belonging.

Labour’s choice of a British Somalian candidate had previously faced criticism from Reform UK’s home affairs spokesman Zia Yusuf. Meanwhile, the final days of campaigning were overshadowed by the Green Party conference, where a controversial motion declaring “Zionism is racism” was passed. Mr Polanski, who is Jewish and increased his party's share of the vote, faced accusations of lacking leadership for not taking part in the debate on the “dangerous” and “divisive” motion. When pressed in media interviews, he declined to directly state whether he supported Israel's right to exist.

Failing to secure a seat in the House of Commons is a significant setback for the Green Party, though Mr Polanski stated his intention to remain as leader. Despite recent dips in his popularity ratings, he has been credited with tripling party membership to over 200,000 since taking the helm a year ago. Ms Abdi-Wali secured 45 per cent of the vote in Holborn and St Pancras, while Mr Polanski finished second with nearly 33 per cent. The seat was vacated by Mr Starmer following his replacement as the country's leader by Andy Burnham.

In her acceptance speech, Ms Abdi-Wali praised Mr Starmer and expressed eagerness to work with Mr Burnham on key issues like housing. Highlighting her personal connection to the area, she noted how Camden provided her and her family with a home, opportunity, and a sense of community. She emphasized the importance of hope in politics, stating that people need to believe their communities can thrive and that tomorrow can be better than today.

The victory provides a welcome boost for Mr Burnham, whose left-wing agenda has helped revive the party's popularity following a dip in nationwide support since the 2024 general election. Although missing out on a Westminster seat is a disappointment for the Greens, the party remains optimistic about its long-term growth and presence in UK politics.
