The International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, Netherlands has faced a new wave of sanctions imposed by the United States, sparking widespread condemnation and renewed support for the global war crimes tribunal from key US allies and international bodies.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that Washington would ban transactions with the court to cripple its operations, stating that President Donald Trump would never permit the Hague to prosecute Americans. Established in 2002, the ICC is tasked with prosecuting individuals accused of genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity when national authorities fail to act.

While the US Treasury Department included a six-month initial grace period and specific exemptions for telecommunications, software, and pension payments, Rubio indicated the penalties could be adjusted if the court failed to meet US demands regarding the prosecution of non-member state officials, such as those from Israel.

In response, the ICC denounced the sanctions as a direct assault on the rule of law and the international legal order, urging its 125 member states to defend the institution. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and UN Human Rights chief Volker Turk both expressed deep alarm, warning that the measures severely threaten international criminal justice.

Traditional US allies, including the foreign ministers of Britain, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Canada, and Japan, issued a joint statement expressing strong disagreement with the sanctions. Dutch Foreign Minister Tom Berendsen and Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot also voiced deep regret, with Belgium calling for the activation of the EU Blocking Statute to protect the court.

Human rights organizations, including Human Rights Watch, the Open Society Justice Initiative, and Amnesty International, strongly condemned the move, accusing the Trump administration of attempting to destroy the international justice system. Conversely, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu commended the decision, praising the US administration for taking action against what he termed a political body.
